Why Foster With All Dog Rescue
Foster providers experience great joy and deep satisfaction when they help an abandoned or neglected dog get a second chance at life. More than a million dogs a year are euthanized in U.S. shelters: in fact almost a third of the dogs who enter shelters are euthanized there. Foster homes can provide a bridge to adoption for dogs failing in the shelter system.
All Dog Rescue was founded in 2003 and has established itself as a highly responsive and respected rescue organization. ADR’s strong reputation attracts exceptional volunteers who actively shape the organization.
All Dog Rescue works closely with Massachusetts shelters, Animal Control Officers and individuals. Shelters ask ADR to take dogs who would do better in a home. ADR does not discriminate on the basis of age, breed, or medical issues. A standardized behavior observation tool is used to avoid taking aggressive dogs. Please consider joining the ADR team by offering your home as a temporary safe haven.
What is Foster Care?
Foster care typically takes from 2 weeks to 2 months, but can take longer, depending on many variables. Providing a foster home means sharing your home with a rescued dog: offering food, shelter, toys, walks and lots of attention, as if the dog were your own, until a permanent home for the dog is found. ADR relies on foster homes to observe behaviors in a variety of situations, and use that information to make a good match with an adoptive family. Foster parents are very involved in selecting a new home for their foster dog. Foster parents review applications, discuss the dog with potential adopters, arrange meetings, and ultimately choose the new home.
Who can foster?
The most important requirements are time and attention. You must be willing to include the dog in family activities, and provide some daily one- on-one time with your rescue, including cuddles, play, and walks. Crates are an invaluable piece of equipment for rescue people and will be provided if needed. Volunteers need to be flexible and patient, as not all of our dogs have basic manners training, and some are not completely house- trained. ADR has a supportive email network to share advice, support, and suggestions with other volunteers.
Foster providers must have transportation to pick up their dog and go to vet appointments if necessary.
If you rent, you must get permission from your landlord before applying to foster for All Dog Rescue.
If you are unable to accept the long-term commitment of giving a dog a permanent home, but miss the companionship of a dog, then fostering may be for you!
